A Good Year to be a Democrat
A Republican pollster told me last week that this year’s elections are looking extremely bad for his side and good for mine.
Four weeks from today, the world will look very different:
- Democrats will control both the House and Senate in Washington;
- They will keep their majorities in both houses of the North Carolina legislature, and they will accuse Republicans of abusing the judicial process in a failed effort to affect the legislative outcome;
- The Democratic left and the Democratic center will go to war in Congress and in the presidential race;
- John Edwards (from the left) will emerge as the biggest challenger to Hillary Clinton (who will zig left from the center);
- Rahm Emanuel, not Nancy Pelosi, will be the greatest force among Democrats in Congress;
- The Change To Win union coalition will be aggressive, and corporate America will be in a panic.
Election sweeps feel awfully good. But the sweepers usually overdo it. See Newt Gingrich after 1994. And reaction sets in two years later. See Bob Dole in 1996.
If Democrats blow this chance, James Carville is right: We have to question our future as a party.
