A Debatable Primary

Here are two questions that answer all you need to know about the Democratic primary for governor.

Have you seen a TV ad by any of the candidates?

Do you plan to watch any of the three back-to-back debates next week?

With no ads running, the debates will give most primary voters their first look at the candidates.  Maybe their only look.

Much like the Republican primary race (before the super PACs jumped it), a candidate can win – or, more likely, lose – the race in a debate.

Usually, debates come along long after ads have been running for months. The candidates have used TV to introduce themselves and define their messages.

Not this race.

So the stakes are higher than ever. A commanding performance can create a front-runner. A fumble can disqualify you. Not to put any pressure on anybody.

By the way, in deciding who won, remember the rule: Bugs Bunny always beats Daffy Duck. That is, the winner is the most comfortable person on stage. (See: JFK and Ronald Reagan.)
