Polls Matter
Here’s a peculiar poll. And a good example why – if you’re a candidate – depending on polls is more reliable than depending on your instincts.
John McLaughlin and Associates, a respected Republican pollster, reports Fred Thompson has gained nine points on Rudy Giuliani since April.
Giuliani dropped from 28% to 24%. Thompson rose from 13% to 18%.
So, you’d think conservatives, unhappy with Giuliani’s stands on gay rights and abortion, have “gone home” to Thompson? Right? Dead wrong.
Thompson’s vote soared 14% – from 4% to 18% – with Moderate Republicans. At the same time Giuliani dropped 8% – from 37% to 29% – with moderates.
Everybody stayed more or less the same with conservatives.
Here’s the current tally:
Giuliani 24%
Thompson 18%
McCain 17%
Romney 7%
Gingrich 5%
