The Bush Presidency was conceived in contempt for the law: a 5-4 Supreme Court ruling that stopped the 2000 vote count while Bush was still ahead.
So it’s no surprise that Bush commutes Scooter Libby’s sentence so as to keep him out of prison.
While Democratic politicians – like Kevin Geddings and Jim Black – get ready to do time behind bars.
What Geddings and Black did was wrong. Geddings lied, and Black took bribes. So they were ripe targets for a Justice Department that – it is now clear – was on the warpath for Democratic politicians.
What Libby did was wrong, too. He perjured himself. But he goes free.
Americans’ contempt for George Bush is grounded in Bush’s contempt for the law.
