Senator John Warner, Virginia Republican, is former Secretary of the Navy, now chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and a reliable supporter of Bush’s policies in Iraq. So when he says the situation there is “drifting sideways,” Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice have some explaining to do.
I didn’t see Warner’s comments in the Raleigh media, but here is what The Virginian-Pilot reported Warner said last week after he returned from a trip to Iraq:
- Iraq “is simply drifting sideways.”
- Its government is “not living up to the fundamental responsibilities of a government.”
- If progress is not made in 90 days, “we got to make some bold decisions here in our country.”
- “I just don’t think more U.S. soldiers is going to make that much difference…The real answer to this question rests with the Iraqi people.”
