“The Democratic Party is focused on filling the void of moral leadership in America.”

- John Edwards
News and Observer

The question, when a politician starts talking about morality, should be – is his real interest morality or politics?

If the answer is he discovered “morality” through a poll, there’s not much more you need to know.

In 1998, John Edwards ran for Senate as a sort of ‘Snow White,’ as a fresh face who said he wasn’t going to take one penny from PAC’s and special interest because it was wrong. He said, instead, he would spend his own money to get elected.

Just a few days ago, the newspapers reported that after he got elected, from 2001 to 2005, Edwards took more trips on corporate jets than anyone in Congress – more even than the President. Whatever happened to not taking money from special interests?

What is the ‘moral’ difference between taking cash on the barrel head from a special interest, and having a conglomerate – in Edward’s case Archer Daniels Midland was one – crank up its corporate jet and fly him from, say, Washington to Los Angeles. According to newspapers, all Mr. Edwards had to reimburse Archer Daniels Midland for the use of their jet was the cost of a first class ticket. According to the New York Times (March 8, 2006), experts say the real costs could run five time the first class fare or more.

Mr. Edwards paid those corporations $313,749 (in first class fares) for flying in their jets. Do the math. If the New York Times is correct these corporations and special interests put, in effect, the equivalent of $1.2 million into Mr. Edwards’ coffers. How ‘moral’ was it of Mr. Edwards to take $1.2 million, roughly, from corporations and special interests while he was serving in the United States Senate?

My suspicion is Mr. Edwards may have discovered ‘morality’ the same way he discovered poverty. How was that? My guess is back during his presidential campaign someone looked at a poll and told Edwards, ‘Eureka, John, we have found an issue you take no risk at all speaking out on.’ Because who, from George Bush to Osama bin Laden, was going to criticize John Edwards for being against poverty?

I suspect John Edwards may have discovered morality the same way.

Good try. Edwards took most of those flights while campaigning for President. A national campaign requires that you be able to travel extensively throughout the country on a bizarre schedule. It’s not the best use of time to fly Southwest or Delta. It’s not as if Edwards was being whisked away to the Bahamas each weekend.

And of course he took more trips than the President. The President has Air Force One!

This is what the cartoonist, Tom Tomorrow, calls nitpicking by the right. Republicans are in control of our country and have been in control for some time. Sorry, John Edwards’ plane trips aren’t taking my mind off the news that state department documents have surfaced which describe a link between Opec and our current Iraq policies. In other words, like Bush said, this war may go on through future presidents. Why? Every time a pipeline gets blown up in Iraq, Opec can increase the price of our gas at the pumps. Supply and Demand. Their profits increase as long as we keep Iraqi oil production down.

Yes, I agree that many Democrats seem to be in the same corporate pockets as Republicans. What’s an American to do?

While Mr. Pearce just finished reading Orwell’s “1984,” I just finished re-reading Herbert’s “Dune.” The story of Dune centers around the spice, and the reoccuring theme “The spice must flow” (or else). While today in American the reoccuring theme (in order to maintain political/economic power) is “the oil must flow!” Somehow I don’t think either party can maintain political/economic control when gas is at $5-7 per gallon. Think of all those soccer mommies (swing voters) and their SUV’s! If the oil should stop flowing what will happen to John Edwards “poor?”

Based on the fact that Edwards keeps appearing in the NandO, and can’t but wonder who at the NandO is in love with him. Also, I noticed the latest picture of Edward’s is the one when he ran in 1998, and not the more recent “gay” Edwards photo. You would think the NandO could afford to send out a photographer to get a more recent photo. The Red Rooster is crowing again!

“Their profits increase as long as we keep Iraqi oil production down.”

“WE” are keeping Iraqi oil production down? Who’s “we,” Ms. Sumner? I know that the TERRORISTS are trying to stymie oil production–are you identifying yourself with them?

That would explain a lot of your postings….
