UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp made one mistake.

When the News and Observer first asked him for Matt Kupec and Tami Hansbrough’s travel records, Chancellor Thorp said, I’ll get back with you.  When he got back with them a week later he told them Kupec and Hansbrough had taken the trips together at the University’s expense – then announced Kupec had resigned.

By then Thorp almost certainly knew the records also showed he’d taken trips with Kupec and Hansbrough but he didn’t mention that – or give the records to News and Observer.

A few days later Tami Hansbrough resigned.

Then, suddenly, Holden Thorp resigned too.

Which seemed odd – until the next morning when the News and Observer published the travel records beneath a headline: “Chancellor Thorp flew with former UNC fundraisers.”

It’s an old story. Rather than telling the press an unpleasant fact Chancellor Thorp told the News and Observer part of the truth – and put himself squarely behind the eight ball.

Carter: you must find it interesting that the faculty, some students and the trustees have all now come out to the support of Thorp? What amazes me is the trustees reaction - passing a resolution urging Thorp to stay.

The trustees must be blind. Have they not been reading the news reports. In this latest scandal - an employee (whose son is a high profile athlete) uses university funds inappropriately. Her actions led to an audit of the Dental Foundation (whom she worked for at the time). The audit forced out her and a number of others from the foundation, including the executive director.

But her actions and dismissal didn't stop her boyfriend, the third highest paid executive officer of the university and vice chancellor of development, from trying to hire her in his office with a six figure salary.

The chancellor stopped this hire because of the audit and potential nepotism allegations. But then, they all conspired to hire this person in another position for another vice chancellor. Thorp approved the hire despite knowledge of the audit and the inappropriate relationship.

Not only is Thorp incompetent in this area but also the entire trustees. They want a chancellor who rehires people once they have defrauded the university. Perhaps this is the current pattern at Carolina or as they call it, the "Carolina Way."

Thanks for keeping them honest, andrew
