Unless you happen to be one of the half-dozen people in Raleigh who do not own a television you’ve figured out by now that both sides in the Presidential race mean to do whatever it takes to win. This virulent outbreak of no holds barred politics has some folks worried we’ve stumbled into a kind of moral swamp, but no holds barred politics isn’t our biggest national vice by a long shot.

Yesterday, the newspaper reported two American soldiers were killed in Afghanistan.

Why were they there? We long ago gave up on winning the war – so why haven’t we done what democracies usually do when they get in this kind of fix: Declare victory, tuck tail, and run?

Venal politics is one thing. But senseless wars are a lot deeper swamp than getting gulled by politicians.

SUPER post, Carter. Totally agree...110%, if there is such a thing :-).

And, if you check it, we're still in Iraq and still suffering losses. But, alas, Obama isn't going to get any kind of negatives by the press or those that work for the press in any kind of effort to show just how ludicrous it is to maintain our presence in either Afghanistan or Iraq. If Bush was still in office...God knows just how hateful, just how negative, just how "questioning" the press would be with America still losing lives in those efforts. But, that's not going to happen with this president. Republicans just have to understand that the mainstream media is all about Obama and his presidency and, truth be known, his reelection.

There's only a "swamp" if republicans are living in it. Otherwise, it's just wise choices, "considered" strategies and so forth.

It's just something we have to live with as a party. If Obama gets another term, we'll see a massive pull out from ALL of our foreign ventures. We're going to see our defense money funneled into the most massive social program escalation in this country no one would have ever imagined.

Take that to the bank.

Sure, what could possibly be wrong with letting the Taliban return to power in Afghanistan?
