Bucky Waters may be a great basketball analyst, but he should stay away from politics. And Coach K should ignore him.
Waters recently opined that Mike Krzyzewski had achieved everything he could in sports and should move on to politics: “I’d like to see him go to Washington. We desperately need leaders. Desperately.” The N&O sports pages chimed in that Waters makes “an interesting case.”
Coach K would be a fool to listen.
If he thinks the Duke-UNC rivalry is bitter, wait until he gets into partisan politics. If he runs, presumably as a Republican, he immediately earns the enmity of half the electorate.
And don’t kid yourself. Nobody really thinks: “Gee, he’s a good basketball coach. He’d be a great Senator.”
Right now, Coach K works with young men who listen to him. In politics, he would work with grumpy old men and women who don’t listen to anybody.
He thinks there are hard fouls on the court? Wait until the first negative ad runs against him.
He should consult that other great North Carolina sports icon who decided he would be a shoo-in for public office: Richard Petty. Petty made an ill-fated run for Secretary of State in 1996. He got pounded by Elaine Marshall. He had more votes the day he announced than any other day in the campaign.
Don’t listen to this siren song, Coach. Stick to the hardwood, not hardball.
