The other day Gary wrote “Why They Lie” about the election in 1984 when Jim Hunt and Jesse Helms were duking it out and how elbow throwing was acceptable in that campaign but outright lying was taboo – that was one line both Helms and Hunt feared to cross. Because they’d pay a price.

That line was still there twenty-four years later when Liddy Dole called Kay Hagan an ‘atheist’ – and paid a price.

But the line has vanished this year, as if the whole country’s chosen sides and made up its mind it’s fine to say anything to win.

On one side we’ve got Mitt Romney supporters saying Barack Obama was never an American citizen and the other side we’ve got Barack Obama supporters saying Mitt Romney is to blame for a woman dying of cancer and it all has Gary shaking his head, wondering, “Does it go on and on like this? Or is there a breaking point?”

Well, we’ve landed in a very old political swamp.

I’ve been reading William Shirer’s The Nightmare Years, 1930-1940.

On September 1st, 1939 in Berlin the German politicians announced Poland had attacked Germany in twelve places – then added, ‘Polish bombs are falling on German soil.’ Before the Germans the Greeks, Romans, French and Russians all had Caesars, Napoleons and Commissars who had no qualms about crossing lines and, in the end, the swamp consumed them all.

So, yes, there is a breaking point.

The question is do we want to reach it?

What's so sad in this year's campaign is that what both candidates have said to be the #1 priority (Jobs/Economy) is being put on the back burner and in its place, we're seeing the worst personal attack campaigns to ever have taken place in our country. Oh, sure, there have been personal attack campaigns and someone that wants to argue with me on this can only cite one or two examples of personal attack ads and make us believe what I'm saying isn't true. But, this election year..in my opinion...is hitting an all time low in scuzzbucketery. And, no discussion about jobs and the economy and the millions of citizens that have lost their jobs/homes/dignity in the past 3 1/2 years under Obama. It's all because Bush left Obama in a jam. Um...go back a few decades and see what kind of jam Carter left Reagan. No bitching, no moaning, no excuses...just going about the business of changing that around. Obama? We're worse off today than ever and "it's all GW Bush's fault".

What a horrible way to run a country. People that vote for Obama will vote for him because 1). they think he'll continue/expand their entitlements or 2). he's a democrat or 3). he's black. It's just that simple. Oh...and if you want to call me a racist for that last remark, show me how I'm not correct saying it. Thanks.

The line you think you and Gary drew in 1984 existed only in your own minds. We are reaping today the seeds you two, and thousands of other professional dissemblers like you, have spent your lives sowing. Thanks guys. Thanks a lot.
