As I ease back into the post-vacation routine, here’s a guest submission from a TAPster:

The recent crash of a Charlotte-based C-130 aircraft while fighting wildfires in the western US makes a sad, revealing point about the mindset of our government today.

That aircraft was a cargo plane, but had been modified to fight fires. In other words, our government used makeshift equipment to provide public safety, apparently because funds are not available to do it correctly.

Wasteful government spending needs to be reduced, without a doubt. But the zeal of the Tea Partyers and other nuts to reduce the size of government made me wonder what our world would be like if these slash-and-burners had been in charge a half a century ago.

Would Tea Partyers have paid for:
·       The interstate highway system
·       The Blue Ridge Parkway
·       Umstead Park
·       Any of the national parks
·       The US Coast Guard
·       Any of the government functions that protect our food and environment.

Nothing is more troubling than our government short-changing those whoprotect us. Our guardians should always have the newest and best tools to keep us safe.

Our next president and legislative leaders -- regardless of their political party -- should have the guts to ensure they do.

WOW! Making justified cuts to budgets doesn't mean it causes plane wrecks and lackluster performances. More money for these people will do no more than more money for teachers...it will just mean the same level of performance with more money for those receiving government salaries. It's not like we haven't seen accidents and situation in our past like what is being presented here.

I say "Tea Partiers"..not "Tea Partyers. But, hey, that's just me.

If we had known, half a century ago, that we were going to run up a $15 trillion debt via runaway growth in entitlements and irresponsible spending, I hope to God we would have had the sense to put the breaks on, even if it cost us a higway or two. But we either didn't know or didn't care, so now we have to pay the price of our irresponsibility.

You think nothing is worse than the government "shortchanging" those who protect us? Take a look at Greece--that's where you Democrats are leading us with your "give everyone what they want and pass the bill to the future" mentality.
