It happens on Wall Street: A tycoon calls an eager young executive into his office and hands him a job to do (like selling Facebook stock) and says, This is your responsibility – you ‘own’ it.

Three years into the ‘Great Recession’ no politician in his right mind wants to ‘own the economy.’  It would be like owning the ‘Death Star.’

Which is why House Speaker Thom Tillis telling the News and Observer “Republicans now own the economy” sounded strange.

At first I thought the Speaker must have confused himself with the President who controls a great deal more of North Carolina’s economy than the Speaker of the House.

Then I thought the idea of politicians ‘owning’ the economy is just plain silly – the economy’s a beast with a mind of its own that regularly tramples politicians in its wake.

For example, North Carolina’s gross domestic product is $385 billion a year and Speaker Tillis can influence exactly 5% of that economy (the $20 billion state budget) – so how can he ‘own’ the whole she-bang? It’s a mystery. But we have Speaker Tillis’ word for it: He ‘owns’ it all.

And the Democrats are delighted.

Tillis again shows he has a tin ear. This is even dumber than the way he handled Zippergate. He proves repeatedly that he is totally unfit for any higher office. Indeed the sooner he can be shown the door from his present position the better.

We need a solid conservative candidate to come forward for US Senate in 2014. The operative words for conservatives and even thinking GOP establishment activists should be ''NOT TILLIS''.

Go back and read the article. It's amazing how people tend to focus on a handful of words in a speech or an answer to a reporter's question and without any regard for the context construct a whole new meaning for the speaker. Tillis was talking about how the economy had become so screwed up due to the policies of the Democrats over the years, but that now that his party was in control people would rightly expect him to fix it, and that he accepted that challenge. That is exactly what people ought to expect of their leaders. If Tillis has any problem at all, it's that he's far more direct and honest in his statements to the press than the chattering class is used to. Gary and Carter, perhaps your problem is that you've both been dealing in lies for political advantage for so long that you don't know how to react when an elected official actually speaks the truth.
