Self-righteous Republican legislators seem determined to hasten the day when their days are numbered.

It’s the pitfall that comes with power: You think you’re invincible, so you act like it. You drew your districts to keep you in power, so you think you’ll never lose power.

So you act like the Senate Republicans did this week: Put tolls on every ferry. Do away with the Teaching Fellows. Brush aside the widowed mother with her five-year-old who pled for anti-smoking efforts. Even veteran lobbyists, noting the tears throughout the hearing room, said they were shocked by the callousness shown there.

Inevitably, the voters get tired of it and throw you out.

It may take a while, given redistricting, but the pendulum always swings. The longer it takes, the harder the eventual swing.

Of course the day will come when power shifts to other forces. No party stays in power forever. That's why it's important for parties to get things done while they can. If they govern as they promised they would they will stay in power much longer than otherwise.

As for self-righteousness, excuse me but you D's cornered the market on that years ago.

I've been wondering where the senate came down on teaching fellows but hadn't found any information. So unlike the house they plan on killing it all together. Man this guys are brutal. If there was ever a program that worked it is the Teaching Fellows. For four years tuition we get at least four years of teaching from some of the best students we could hope for. And if they change majors, drop out, or fail to teach for four years they have to pay it all back. Talk about dumb, this takes the cake. Maybe the house can get them to go along with their version on this one. At least they would allow the program to use their reserve fund to pay for this year and then start funding it next year.

Teaching Fellows is one of the best things government does, perhaps one of the few things government actually gets right. I hope and expect it will survive in the final version of the budget.
