Last fall’s Wake County school board elections followed The Golden Rule of Politics: Them that has the gold rules.
Bob Luddy and Art Pope – two of the biggest opponents of public schools – were the biggest contributors to school board candidates.
Luddy and Pope themselves contributed $38,000.
Here’s a place where the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on corporate campaign spending could have a big impact.
There are some big businesses in Raleigh and WakeCounty that care – or should care – about the public schools.
Time to ante up.

Don't you get it Gary? Being for neighborhood schools IS being FOR the schools, even if some on the extreme left are still living in the Cross-bussing days of the 1970's. Only leftists interested in social engineering over education want to waste all that money (and - HORRORS - what would Al Gore think of the ''carbon footprint'') on busses and gasoline that should be spent on the real needs of education. But, yeah, I guess corporation that sold school busses and gasoline would be very interested in backing candidates who would continue this wasteful boondoggle.

Did you not read the whole article Gary? The total money spent on each side was a lot closer to even ($190K for the new majority, $140K for the old guard if I recall). You'd have to be pretty obtuse to conclude that money swung this election. The N&O's spin on the story is just another example of why everything you read in that rag needs to be taken with a block of salt.

I can't speak to Luddy, but Gary is accurate in referring to Art Pope as an opponent of public schools. The man is opposed to public everything - he's a down the line libertarian (except when it comes to people's sex lives). So by definition, he's not a fan of public schools. I think Carbine is right - money didn't ultimately play a deciding role in the election. Like it or not (and I don't) many people have a negative knee-jerk reaction to diversity policies in education. These kinds of policies are most successful in communities willing to support such measures and let them take effect.

Well, Dan, I guess you are not a disciple of Al Gore in his Church of Global Warming. You are willing for those buses to spew all of that horrid (!) CO2 for unnecessary carting around of school children just so they can be labratory rats for liberal social engineering.
