Two Democratic Parties

Just like John Edwards’s “two Americas,” today we have two Democratic parties: the Obama party and the Clinton party.

If you want to know where this kind of split leads, read about Kennedy v Carter in 1980, Ford v Reagan in 1976 and McCarthy v Humphrey in 1968.  This is a formula for defeat in November.

The longer the fight goes on, the rifts grow deeper, the feelings more bitter and the time for healing shorter.

Democrats are fractured along racial, gender, age and class lines.  Obama gets most black voters; Clinton, most whites.  Obama voters are younger; Clinton’s, older.  Women like Clinton; men, Obama.  The upscale “Starbucks” voters swoon for Obama, the Dunkin’ Donuts crowd soaks up Clinton.

If Obama gets “robbed” of the nomination by superdelegates, his acolytes will be angry.  If women are “robbed” of their rightful time by misogynistic men, they will threaten to stay home.

It is a fairy tale that some Big Shot Democrat can sit the candidates down and resolve this.  Like who?  Howard Dean?  Nancy Pelosi?  Al Gore?  Could one of them persuade Obama or Clinton to say: “Gee, you’re right; I should step aside and let Barack/Hillary be the nominee.  Well played, old sport.”

While the negatives pile up on both Obama and Clinton – for convenient use by the Republicans in the fall – John McCain gets a free ride.  If there was ever a fraud who deserved unmasking, it’s Maverick McCain, Mister Ethics and Integrity, Mister Stay-the-Course in Iraq, Mister Independent, Mister Closet Progressive, Mister Straight Talk.

For months, I’ve told my Democratic friends this is our election to lose.  And I’ve told my Republican friends not to worry; we’re perfectly capable of blowing it.

We are well on our way.

Well Mr Pearce, why aren't you as outspoken about the corruption that exists in the Democratic party in North Carolina?

Oh and why has Obama suddenly changed his campaign from "CHANGE" as he arrived in North Carolina? Because if there is one state that needs change it is North Carolina.

Did you know that North Carolinian Republican legislative candidates received more total votes than Democrats in 2006. I think the democrats are in more trouble locally and nationally than you may believe. Just remember that even though Bush's approval rating is at 35%, Congress' (democrat controlled) approval rating is 21%.

Well Gary,  I hope not.

I don't know that women who have worked for Hillary's nomination would withhold their votes from Obama.    Most of the vitriol I've seen from the Clinton supporters is coming from men.    It really is difficult for me to imagine that a Democrat in either camp would actually stay home and let McCain have it.

In fact, I'm starting to wonder if some of the voices that are purportedly pro-Clinton on the "BlueNC" blog are not even Democrats, but are, in fact GOPers hoping to keep the fight alive, and widen the division within the Democratic Party.

But maybe that's just me hoping that we Democrats aren't doing exactly what you've pointed out.   Part of the reason I'm a Democrat is that I have these ideals.  But geez it's hard to hold on to 'em in these times.

Hey Brunette?

Will you send me a small donation so I can rub it further in the faces of Republicans. They consider me sort of a independent maverick. I do tell it like it is and I always make the point that Dole, Bush, and McCain are not what we consider right wing conservatives. Yet all three have gotten the Republican Presidential nomination.

Believe it or not, the Republican party is made up of conservatives, moderates and yes and even a few liberals. We are all attracted to the GOP for its non class warfare economic policies. And it's social platform that favors families over villages.

So send me a donation and I will be greatful.

Paul,

It is always gratifying to be reminded that folks from different parts of the political spectrum have a sense of humor.

HA!

I assure you that were I not aware that the GOP contains a great variety of perspectives, I would be less kind than I am now.    There are idiots in every party, in every professional group, in every social gathering, in every line at your favorite coffee shop.   That's just the way it is.

I don't hold your membership against the entire GOP.

And you'll always have points with me for appreciating the spelling corrections.

(That should be "grateful," not "greatful," though if you eat enough Easter candy you might be the latter.)
